The Bosphorus (/ˈbɒsfərəs/) or Bosporus (/ˈbɒspərəs/, Turkish: Boğaziçi, Greek: Βόσπορος, Vosporos, Bulgarian: Босфора, Bosfora), also known as the Istanbul Strait (Turkish: İstanbul Boğazı), is a strait that forms part of the boundary between Europe and Asia as its shown in bosphorus strait map. It—along with the Dardanelles—is one of two straits in Turkey. The world narrowest strait used for international navigation, the bosphorus strait connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara (which is connected by the Dardanelles to the Aegean Sea, and thereby to the Mediterranean Sea.)
Bosphorus strait is a very busy waterway with many ships and oil tankers going through it, as well as local fishing and ferries go to the Asian side back and forth as its mentioned in bosphorus strait map. Around 48.000 ships pass through bosphorus strait annually, three times denser than the Suez Canal traffic and four times denser than the Panama Canal. Approximately 55 million tones of oil are shipped through the strait each year.
Bosphorus Strait has a significant place in the international maritime map as it is a busy waterway that witnesses the presence of many ships and oil tankers every day, in addition to the local fishing and passenger boats as you can see in bosphorus strait map. The Bosphorus strait importance lies in the fact that is a significant shipping route that links the Black Sea with the world oceans.
Bosphorus strait comes from a Thracian word which means "passage of the cow", deriving from the legend of Io who was one of many lovers of Zeus (see bosphorus strait map). When Hera, Zeus wife, suspected her husband being involved in a love affair with Io, Zeus converted Io in a small cow and tried to send her away from Hera rage. She (the cow) swam across the bosphorus strait but Hera discovered it and she sent big flies after the cow to bite and disturb her all the time, ending Io in the Aegean Sea (thus named Ionian sea).
